Science CHAPTER NO.1 – Food: Where Does It Come From – Notes

NEW TERMS-

  • Food – Food is a basic need of all micro organism to fulfill their need of energy, growth, repair body parts.
  • Ingredients – Materials needed to prepare any food item is called ingredients.  Example to make Chapati, we need water and flour.  And if we want to cook boiled rice, we need rice and water.
  • Sprouting – The growing of baby root from the socked seed is known as sprouting.
  • Apiculture – Rearing of honey bees on a large scale
  • Decomposer – The organisms that feed on animals and plants and decompose them.
  • Balanced Diet – Balanced Diet is a diet which provides all the nutrients in a proper quantity .
  • Deficiency Diseases – Diseases that occur due deficiency of nutrients are called Deficiency Diseases .
  • Edible parts – The parts of plants which can be eaten are called Edible  parts.
  • Malnutrition – People who do not eat a balanced diet they suffer from malnutrition .
  • Nectar – Nectar is a sugar-rich liquid produced by plants in glands .
  • Food variety – The different types of food that we eat in our day to day life for example-Chapati ,idli ,rice ,and etc. are known as Food variety.

Question 1 – Explain the classification of animals based on their habits ?

Ans – Omnivorous

  1. Animals that eat both plants and animals are known as Omnivorous.
  2. For example – Human beings, Dogs, Cats and etc.

          Carnivorous

  1. Animals which eat only animals are called Carnivorous.
  2. For example – Meat

           Herbivorous – 

  1. Animals that only eat plants and plant products are known as Herbivorous.
  2.  They are also known as primary consumers.
  3. For example – Cow, Goat and etc.

Question 2 – Write down important function of food ?

Ans –

  1. Food gives us energy .
  2. It helps in growth and development of our body .
  3. It protect us from diseases

Question 3 – Make a table of food items of it’s ingredients?

Ans –Food is obtained from plants and animals .

Sources of food- Plants-Fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, Spices, oil, sugar, medicines,

Animals-Milk and Honey

Question 5 – List down food sources from plant ?

Ans –

  1. Cereals- Wheat, rice, maize
  2. Pulses-Moongdal ,soyabean and Rajma
  3. Spices– Cloves ,chillies and turmeric.
  4. Fruits– Pear, apple
  5. Oil-Mustard Oil, Coconut Oil
  6. Vegetables-Pea, Potato, lady Finger
  7. Medicines-Herbs, Amla, Tulsi

Question 6 – List down food sources from animals ?

Ans

  1. Milk- It is obtained from cow, buffalo and sheep
  2. Honey-1.It is obtained from Honey

2.Bees collect nector from flowers and convert into honey and store it their hive for throughout the year.

  2. They are rich in vitamins.
